A note from the porch

A new lodge on old Texas land.

The house was built in 2003 — fifteen minutes from Bandera, forty minutes from San Antonio, on a quiet stretch of FM 1283 that lets the road noise give up before it reaches the porch.

The rooms are warm and the towels are folded. The peacocks start at six, and there is no rush whatsoever about any of it.

Six and a half acres, less than a mile from Medina Lake. You come here to read on the porch, walk the land, sit with people you like. That's the whole pitch. Office hours: just about 24/7 — Dad rarely sleeps.

The Bandera Suite

Named for the cowboy capital, fifteen minutes up the road.

Two queen beds, a private bath, and the room with the most calm in it — plus a small antique toddler’s bed for the littlest traveler. The Frontier sleeps four.

Shared spaces

The kitchen, the dining room, the long porch.

Your room comes with the run of the common spaces downstairs — the new kitchen, the dining room, and the game room. The kitchen is stocked. The dining room sits eight comfortably and twelve if you bring chairs. The pool table has been re-felted — which is the right number of times for a lodge that has been open this long.

We're opening the lodge to weddings — big or small. Six and a half acres, plenty of parking, and the whole property becomes yours for 24 hours: both suites and the three themed rooms included. Every wedding is priced individually, because every wedding is different.

The lodge has hosted weddings before. A real gallery — ceremony, long table, bar, porch — is in the works from past weekends. Until it's ready, call us and we'll send the photos directly. The actual day gets shaped around the couple either way.

Bring the rig. Stay for the porch.

Trucks, RVs, boats, trailers — if it rolls, it can rest here.

Park it at the Lodge for a month at a time — $59, $69, or $76 a month depending on the size of the rig. Our family lives on the property. Add a night in one of our five rooms whenever you’re passing through; the porch is open either way.

The lodge sits in the middle of the Hill Country, and the middle is a good place to start. These are the day trips we send our own people on — ask us and we’ll draw you the map.

Paradise Canyon

Since 1957, one of the best swimming holes in the Hill Country. Swim it, tube it, paddle it, fish it — there’s a playground for the small ones and shade for everybody else.

On the Medina River, a short drive from the porch. We’ll tell you where to put in and what to pack.

Bandera

The Cowboy Capital of the World, just down the road. Sawdust-floor honky-tonks, Saturday rodeos, and a natural history museum with dinosaurs along the trail. Go on a Saturday.

02 · Just past the ridge

Medina Lake

Our view, not our address. The lake sits just past the ridge, and the sunset from up here is the part we’d bottle if we could.

03 · A half-day

The trails

Miles of trail through the state natural area past Bandera — hike it, ride it on horseback, or walk until the town noise is gone. We’ll point you to the right trailhead.

We stayed at the Bandera Suite for the eclipse. The cabin is beautiful and we had an amazing stay — the hospitality and breakfast are unmatched. Our grandkids didn't want to leave. Hope the trails lead us back to this place!
